Dzolomari Carnival

Name: Dzolomari Carnival
Location: Begnishte, near Kavadarci

Description:
The Dzolomari Carnival is another winter event rooted in pagan customs. Every winter in the village of Begnishte, men dress up in animal skins, paint their skin with ashes and play ritual games with sticks and bells to scare away the evil spirits. The event, as other winter carnival events, is organized between 13 and 14 January, as a celebration of the coming of the New Year (according to the old calendar).
The carnival is a centuries-old tradition in this area and compared to other carnival events (such as Vevchani and Rusalii) it has been retained in its most authentic form.
If you are looking for an authentic experience of Macedonian tradition, make sure to visit Begnishte – the Dzolomari will not leave you indifferent.
